Should Avusa have fired Sowetan sub-editor Llewellyn Kriel for blogging?

Last week Avusa (formerly Johncom) fired veteran sub-editor Llewellyn Kriel for revealing allegedly confidential company information through blogging [see Avusa fires journalist for blogging]. According to Arthur Goldstuck, “[a]t the hearing, Kriel was told by management that he would receive no sanction for bringing the newspaper into disrepute, on the basis of his argument that he had a constitutional right to freedom of expression. However, for divulging confidential corporate information, his contract would be terminated with effect from December 31..." Should he have been fired?
