The power of visual communication

An exhibition of powerful photojournalism and avant-garde photography depicting the paradox of war, peace and aims to build awareness of the devastating effect is has, especially on children.

Pik Botha will open the exhibition on Wednesday 27 August 2008 at 19h00.

Gus Waschefort will deliver an address on: An Analysis of the Contemporary Use of Child Soldiers.

Exhibitors:

Gus Waschefort, LLB cum laude (Pretoria,) FPSSA, Advocate of the High Court of South Africa, the 'child soldier advocate' and PhD candidate at SOAS, University of London, whose photographs relate the devastation to worlds and lives of children in war torn African countries, as well as poverty stricken African and Asian countries.

Alet Pretorius, BJourn cum laude (Rhodes): Beeld photographer.
"Photography broadens my view of the world. Being a photojournalist you are put in unfamiliar situations and recording such events gives you a better understanding of other people, cultures and events. "

Hein Waschefort, FPSSA Dux, whose avant-garde photos are often controversial, but denote powerful messages portraying pressing current issues, such as AIDS, crime, poverty, etc.

Hein Lass, an engineer by profession, only shoots on location with available light and is notorious for saying that he has the biggest studio in the world. His provocative avant-garde images levitate photographic art to another dimension.

Theana Calitz, B-Tech Photography (TUT), Beeld photographer. With professional experience ranging from food and fashion photography to photo journalism, Theana has already experienced some of the best and worst offered by modern day South African culture.

Willi Sator, well-known and top-selling South African wildlife photographer with a background as a scientist at CSIR - now full time photographer and lecturer.

Gert Potgieter, BA Fine Arts Hons (Unisa), well-known South African sculptor whose sculptures "tell a thousand tales".
