Laboratory health and safety - Basics and beyond

This two-day course focuses on best practices and applications of safety principles in the laboratory environment.

Rather than replicating what is found in legislation, this course covers the “nuts and bolts” of laboratory safety, including chemical, biological, physical, and psychosocial hazards, and provides the participants with a sound basis for exercising good judgment and the ability to set up and coordinate lab safety programs.

Lab safety controls, ergonomics, equipment safety, emergency response and waste disposal procedures will be discussed and participants will be given the opportunity to engage in problem solving sessions to address specific topics of interest. This course is based on the publication “Laboratory Safety - CSMLS Guidelines 2006”. It touches upon all important aspects of lab safety including: control of biological, chemical and physical hazards, indoor air quality and ventilation, emergency response procedures, waste disposal methods, equipment safety, personal protection, as well as the principles of loss control, safety management, and setting up a lab safety program. The course consists of oral presentations, multimedia tools, problem solving sessions, group discussions, and interactive question-and-answer periods. Participants are encouraged to raise issues of their particular concern with the expectation that that will complete bring home practical solutions and fresh approaches to help them manage lab safety.
