The hottest online investment game for varsity students - the Student Village Investment Challenge - is open for business and the competition is already heating up!
Each student who signs up for the Investment Challenge gets R100 000 in virtual money to use for trading on the JSE. The game has educational elements in that it introduces students to the stock market and how it works, and lets them try their hand at stock trading. Students can chose to play as individuals, or residences, sports teams or campus societies, and class mates can form trading teams.
Last year's Investment Challenge was won by industrial psychology student Dorron Aremband from Wits, who took top honours after quadrupling his initial investment over a three-month period. He beat 1 500 other traders. His advice? “Watch the indicators, watch the news and keep an eye on the US markets.”
Discussion boards, notices, regular polls and friend-to-friend interactions within the Student Village website (www.studentvillage.co.za) keep traders up to date with what's happening on the stock exchange, as well as with the progress of their fellow investors. Players' standings are clearly reflected and updated on the site, so the challenge between friends often produces impressive results.
Prizes range from a Student Village hamper worth R500 to a hamper worth R1 500 - cool stuff for challengers who watch the stocks and make some savvy investments. Anyone can play, but only students at tertiary education institutions are eligible to win prizes. This year's Investment Challenge ends on 31 October 2008.
“This is the eighth consecutive year that the Student Village Investment Challenge has dared students to see just what kind of traders they can turn themselves into,” says Student Village director Marc Kornberger. “They have nothing to lose and everything to gain by spending time figuring out how the stock exchange works. So, get to www.studentvillage.co.za/invest today, sign up to compete in the Student Village Investment Challenge 2008 and do your best to shine at trading shares!”
