Penguin Films, the Cape Film Commission and Waterfront Studios hosted the semi-final round of judging for the Asia/Africa/Middle East region for the 2008 International Emmy Awards. The judging, for the Arts Programming and Telenovela categories, took place on 1 and 2 August 2008 in Cape Town.
The panel of expert jurors, selected in collaboration with The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, included South African representatives from the subscription television industry, the free-to-air networks, the production community and the media. The panel determined programs that will advance to the Final Round of Judging in September.
As a regional host, Penguin Films, the Cape Film Commission and Waterfront Studios joined the prestigious line-up of leading international entertainment companies and organisations who have associated with the International Academy to recognise excellence in television produced outside of the United States.
Hosts are members of The International Academy. All judging events are held in compliance with the International Emmy Awards' strict judging procedures. A complete list of the 2008 hosts is available at www.iemmys.tv.
The 2008 International Emmy Awards final nominations will be announced in October at the MIPCOM conference in Cannes, France.
The winners will be presented with their Emmys at the 36th International Emmy Awards Gala in New York City.
Penguin Films, the Cape Film Commission and Waterfront Studios hosted the semi-final round of judging at Waterfront Studios in Port Road, V&A Waterfront. Last year's semi-final round was hosted by the SABC in Johannesburg. It is therefore an honour for Cape Town to be recognised as having the talent and resources to host such an event.
Penguin's Roberta Durrant, this year's Ambassador for The International Academy in South Africa, said: “We're proud to be able to facilitate the Semi-Final Round of Judging in the categories of Arts Programming and Telenovela for the geographical regions of Asia/Africa/Middle East in Cape Town, South Africa. This has become possible through the partnership with the Cape Film Commission and Waterfront Studios.”
The Cape Film Commission's Laurence Mitchell said, “Cape Town has always positioned itself as an international player in the global film industry. Having the opportunity to host this international event in partnership with Penguin Films and Waterfront Studios once again reinforces our belief that everything is possible and that in Cape Town you can.”
Waterfront Studios' Mike Smit added, “Our participation in co-hosting this event is a result of Waterfront Studios's and the Western Cape becoming recognised as an international player servicing film and television productions from around the world.”
